Product Barcode Generator

Retailers and warehouses need every product to carry a scannable barcode. This module assigns a valid EAN13 barcode automatically to each product created without one, drawing numbers from a dedicated sequence. It works with the Products, Inventory and Point of Sale scanning that read the standard barcode field. It saves manual numbering and prevents duplicate codes.

   Configure the barcode sequence

   The module installs a sequence called Product Barcode (EAN13) with a two-digit prefix and ten padding digits, giving twelve digits. Administrators can inspect it under the sequences technical menu and change the prefix if needed. The sequence is shared by all companies. Twelve digits are required because the check digit is added afterwards.

   Create a product without a barcode

   When a user or an import creates a product and leaves the barcode empty, the module intervenes automatically. There is no button to press. Products that already have a barcode keep it. Batch creation is handled too, with numbers reserved within the batch.

   Compute the EAN13 check digit

   The next twelve-digit value from the sequence gets its check digit appended using Odoo's barcode helper, producing a valid thirteen-digit code. A sequence value that is not twelve digits is used as configured. The result is written to the standard barcode field. It can be scanned immediately.

   Skip codes that are already used

   Before assigning, the module checks that the number is not held by another product and skips it if it is, trying up to one hundred times. This avoids duplicate barcodes even after imports with manual codes. If the sequence is missing, no barcode is set and the product is still created. Users can edit the barcode afterwards.
